It is traditionally hosted in a ground-floor garage open nearly all night, drawing crowds of locals\u2014especially children, who are always the first to arrive.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u2022 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">June 22nd: &#8220;Diumenge des Be&#8221; (Sunday of the Lamb)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">&#8220;Diumenge des Be&#8221; always takes place on the Sunday before Sant Joan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Early in the morning, around 8:00 AM, the &#8220;<strong>home des be<\/strong>&#8221; (Man of the Lamb)\u2014a local farmer dressed in sheepskins representing <strong>John the Baptist<\/strong>\u2014prepares to set off. Carrying the live lamb on his shoulders, he leaves the caixer pag\u00e8s&#8217;s house accompanied by the festival board (excluding the caixer senyor and the chaplain).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>9:00 AM: The &#8220;Primer Toc&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The festival officially begins with the &#8220;primer toc de fabiol&#8221;<\/strong> (the first notes played on the drum and wooden flute) by the <strong>fabioler<\/strong> at the <strong>Caixer Senyor&#8217;s Palace<\/strong>, signaling the departure of &#8220;s&#8217;homo des be&#8221; and his procession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Throughout the day, the procession winds through the streets of the Old Town, visiting the Town Hall, the Bishop&#8217;s Palace, and the Des Born Theatre\u2014where the traditional <strong>&#8220;Foc i Fum&#8221;<\/strong> zarzuela is performed. They also stop at the geriatric hospital, local social clubs, historic manors, and the homes of local noblemen to invite them to the upcoming festivities on June 23rd and 24th.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Around 8:00 PM: Hazelnut Throwing<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While the procession visits noble homes, the tradition of throwing hazelnuts takes over Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n, known as &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--contrast);\"><strong>Sa Contramurada<\/strong>&#8220;<\/span>, accompanied by the Ciutadella municipal band. This highly anticipated moment is a favorite among children; though it turns into a lively free-for-all, the hazelnuts are thrown playfully and safely, as the event is a true expression of love and joy.<\/p>\n<p>Once the scheduled visits wrap up, the traditional &#8220;beguda de caixers&#8221; takes place, where the riders gather for refreshments at the caixer casat&#8217;s home. Afterward, the caixer senyor and caixer capell\u00e0 take their leave, bringing the day&#8217;s events to a close later that evening.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u2022 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">June 23rd: Dissabte de Sant Joan (Saint John&#8217;s Eve)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2:00 PM: &#8220;Primer Toc&#8221; at the Caixer\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px;\"><b>Senyor&#8217;s Palace<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On <strong>Sant Joan&#8217;s Eve<\/strong>, at exactly two o&#8217;clock in the afternoon, the &#8220;fabioler&#8221; requests permission to begin the festivities at the palace of the Caixer Senyor, who presides over the festival for the current two-year term. This massive gathering erupts with emotion the moment the &#8220;fabiol&#8221; flute sounds for the first time. This iconic melody will guide the entire festival, setting the pace for every event to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the &#8220;<strong>replec<\/strong>&#8221; begins as the fabioler leads the way to gather the remaining members of the &#8220;<strong>qualcada<\/strong>&#8220;. Once the full cavalcade of horsemen has formed, the <strong>Sant Joan flag<\/strong> is officially handed over to the caixer fadr\u00ed\u2014who will proudly carry it throughout the celebrations\u2014by the bachelor rider&#8217;s wife. The last to join the qualcada are the caixer capell\u00e0 and the caixer senyor.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">6:00 PM: Caragol des Born<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;<strong>Caragol des Born<\/strong>&#8221; takes place in Pla\u00e7a des Born, where over a hundred riders and their horses elegantly rear and dance to the rhythm of the &#8220;<strong>jaleo<\/strong>&#8220;\u2014the iconic traditional music of Menorca&#8217;s patron saint festivals.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">7:30 PM: Mass at the Sant Joan Chapel<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Afterward, they make their way in pilgrimage to the small <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xLMsLJGPZ17Mx6WN6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>chapel of Sant Joan de Missa<\/strong><\/a>, roughly 3 km from Ciutadella, where a mass is held in honor of the patron saint. Afterward, the riders stop for light refreshments to recharge. As night falls, the horsemen ride back to town. Meanwhile, at 7:00 PM, the playful hazelnut battle resumes along Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n (&#8220;<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--contrast);\">Sa Contramurada&#8221;) and Pla\u00e7a de ses Palmeres<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">9:00 PM: Caragol de Ses Voltes<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once all the horsemen have returned to town, the &#8220;<strong>caragol de ses voltes<\/strong>&#8221; begins\u2014a slow procession through the beautiful, narrow medieval streets of the city center, following the street known as &#8220;Ses Voltes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: var(--contrast);\">10:00 PM: Ses Corregudes<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The procession then moves through the <strong>Pla\u00e7a de la Catedral<\/strong>, where the traditional &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--contrast);\"><strong>Corregudes<\/strong>&#8221; (horse races) take place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">11:00 PM: Caragol de Santa Clara<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The riders arrive at the Santa Clara convent (<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--contrast);\"><strong>Caragol de Santa Clara<\/strong>) <\/span>around 11:00 PM.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--contrast);\">Afterward, they bid farewell to the caixer capell\u00e0 and caixer senyor in front of their respective homes. This is followed by the traditional &#8220;<strong>beguda de caixers<\/strong>&#8221; (refreshments for the riders) at the Caixer Senyor&#8217;s palace and the final departure (on foot) of the Caixer Capell\u00e0. The festivities continue into the early hours of the morning. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u2022 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">June 24th: Diada de Sant Joan (Saint John&#8217;s Day)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">8:00 AM: Primer Toc<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sant Joan&#8217;s Day begins at 8:00 AM, when the &#8220;fabioler&#8221; requests permission at the <strong>Caixer Senyor&#8217;s<\/strong> palace to start the day&#8217;s gathering. They then head to the caixer casat&#8217;s home to retrieve the flag left there the previous day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Following the same order and protocols as the day before, the following events take place:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Corregudes a sa Pla\u00e7a (Ses Voltes)<\/span><\/strong><br \/><br \/><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1:30 PM: Caragol de Santa Clara.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>2:30 PM: <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px;\"><b>Missa de Caixers<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Arrival at the <a title=\"Cathedral of Menorca\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viajamenorca.com\/en\/?p=66623\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Cathedral<\/strong><\/a> for the celebration of the <strong>Missa de Caixers<\/strong> (Riders&#8217; Mass), followed by refreshments for the riders at the <strong>Caixer Capell\u00e0&#8217;s<\/strong> home.<br \/><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">5:00 PM: Replec<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><div class=\"g g-7\"><div class=\"g-single a-54\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.viajamenorca.com\/en\/activities\/boat-rental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\r\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.viajamenorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/INGLES_BLUE-1-1.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"210\" title=\"Boat hire\" alt=\"Boat hire\" \/>\r\n<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The cavalcade reforms on Carrer de Sant Jeroni and Carrer de Sant Francesc to carry out the following events:<br \/><strong>Invitation<\/strong> by the <strong>Caixer Senyor<\/strong> to the council members at the <strong>Town Hall<\/strong> balcony, where they are welcomed by local authorities, followed by their descent to the port to attend the games.<br \/>Afterward, they head to the <strong>Santa Clara<\/strong> convent for a &#8220;caragol&#8221; involving the caixers casats and the Caixer Senyor\u2019s request to the nuns.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">7:00 PM: &#8220;Jocs des Pla&#8221; (Medieval-style Tournaments)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The &#8220;Jocs des Pla&#8221; consist of a series of skill-based challenges rooted in <strong>medieval tournaments<\/strong>. This is one of the most significant, spectacular, and crowded events of the Sant Joan festival. They are held at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;<strong>Es Pla<\/strong>,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">the esplanade at the <strong>Ciutadella port<\/strong>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Caragol des Pla<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon arriving at the port, the riders begin the &#8220;<strong>Caragol des Pla<\/strong>.&#8221; During this procession, the caixers, mounted on their decorated horses, complete several laps to the rhythm of the <strong>Jaleo<\/strong>, performed by the magnificent Ciutadella municipal band.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Following the jaleo, the &#8220;Jocs des Pla&#8221; begin with the following trials:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Breaking the &#8220;carotes.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One of the most thrilling and iconic events of the day.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;<strong>carotes<\/strong>&#8221; are traditional oval wooden shields featuring hand-painted caricatures of local figures. Two riders gallop forward; one carries the shield, and the other must break it with a small red clay pitcher. After the run, the local youths scramble to collect a piece of the shield as a souvenir trophy.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Correr l&#8217;ensortilla<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another highlight is the &#8220;<strong>ensortilla<\/strong>.&#8221; Riders gallop toward a suspended ring, attempting to spear it with a lance. If successful, the band plays a traditional festival song, prompting the crowd to break into dance.<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\">&#8220;Winners of each trial are awarded a green reed and a silver spoon.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Correr abrazados<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In this trial, two riders (often family members, such as father and son, brothers, or cousins) gallop side-by-side, aiming to embrace and kiss each other on the cheek as they pass, to the applause of the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Caragol des Pla<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the trials, the &#8220;<strong>Caragol des Pla<\/strong>&#8221; is repeated to the rhythm of the <strong>Jaleo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">11:00 PM: Corregudes a la Pla\u00e7a<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once the games conclude, they head to the <strong>Pla\u00e7a de la Catedral<\/strong> and Carrer Ses Voltes to perform the final &#8220;<strong>ses corregudes<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">12:00 AM: Caragol de ses voltes<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">12:30 AM: Caragol de Santa Clara<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Farewell ride of the caixer capell\u00e0 and caixer senyor.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>They drop off the Caixer Senyor and enjoy final refreshments at his palace.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">5:00 AM: Darrer toc de fabiol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The final notes are played at the <strong>Sant Antoni Maria Claret parish<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.viajamenorca.com\/en\/magazine\/sant-joan-festival\/#Mapa_de_las_fiestas_8211_principales_escenarios\"><strong>55 Pere Cort\u00e8s Street<\/strong><\/a>), marking the end of the festival.
