Abarcas Menorquinas (Menorcan sandals)

The typical Menorca sandal, called abarca or ‘avarques’, is made with a rubber sole and leather upper.

Abarcas Menorquinas (Menorcan sandals)
The typical ‘avarques’ sandals, which bring us the scents and memories of the island.

In the past, they were worn by fishermen and farmers, the latter having invented them for working in the fields in the early 20th century.

They were rustic in design, with soles made from used tyres, and only came in one colour: natural leather.

Today they are in fashion and can be found in the collections of the most prestigious designers and in shoe shops, in all colours and finishes, with prints, fabric, esparto grass or raffia braiding.

Many artists, celebrities and influencers wear them regularly, slipping them on during their summer holidays on the islands.

Even members of the royal family wear sandals during their annual holidays in Mallorca.

They are manufactured from size 18 upwards, and the smaller sizes have a macro-porous sole to make them lighter.

There is an eco-friendly and vegan line, handmade, with recycled tyre soles and imitation leather.

If you want to see how they are made, you will find factories and small artisan workshops producing Menorcan sandals in Ciutadella, Ferreries, Es Migjorn, and Alaior.

Here we can see how they are manufactured in the workshop of Avarques Castell Menorca.
