The climate of the island is typically Mediterranean, with mild and pleasant temperatures, featuring the north winds known as “Tramuntana“. Here we show you a small weather forecast from AEMET and updated Meteosat satellite images.
Temperatures
The climate of Menorca stands out for its mild temperatures, with an annual average between 16 and 17 degrees Celsius; the island allows you to enjoy a pleasant environment throughout most of the year.
Summers, with maximums around 30ºC, are ideal for relaxing on the beach or practicing water sports. And in winter, with average temperatures of 7ºC, you can explore the island without needing excessive clothing, enjoying quieter landscapes and beautiful sunsets.
Winds, the “tramuntana”
A highlight is the cool and characteristic north wind, called “tramuntana,” (Tramontane), which characterizes the Menorcan landscape.
The “tramuntana,” coming from Europe, is colder in winter but becomes a pleasant and appreciated breeze in summer. In contrast, the south wind, coming from North Africa, brings a warm and comforting sensation during the coldest months of the year.
However, on certain occasions, these winds can transform into dry and vigorous gusts, especially during winter, when they can exceed 120 kilometers per hour. This is why Menorca earned the nickname “S’illa d’es vent,” the island of the wind.
Rainfall
Rain in summer is scarce and irregular, distributed among the other seasons, especially in autumn, with the peculiarity that it might be raining in Mahón while, at the same time, it is sunny in Ciutadella.
This means that, for example, you can choose between the east coast beaches or the west coast beaches depending on what suits you best.
The distribution of this rain throughout the months of the year is also very uneven; thus, in a normal rainfall regime, the seasonal maximum occurs in autumn, being very scarce during the summer period.
The average annual rainfall varies from one part of the island to another, between 450 mm in the southeast region and 650 mm in inland regions and the extreme northeast.
