Before traveling to Menorca: Frequently asked questions

Before planning your trip, it is normal to have some doubts. Here we offer answers to the most common questions so you can make the most of your stay in this Balearic paradise.

1. What is the best time of year to travel to Menorca?

The best time to enjoy the island is from May to October. While July and August are the hottest months with the most tourists, the preceding months (May, June) and subsequent months (September) offer perfect weather without the crowds, allowing you to explore the island with greater peace of mind. Personally, I recommend the month of September: the weather is still excellent, but the island feels more relaxed and has the best sunsets.

2. What is the climate like in Menorca? Is it windy all year round?

Menorca has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers (25-30°C) and mild winters (10-15°C). The Tramontana, a characteristic wind, can blow strongly in winter and spring. However, it softens in summer, providing a refreshing breeze that makes temperatures more pleasant. I recommend visiting the island in spring and autumn: Pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists (especially in May, June, and September).

3. How many days do I need to see Menorca?

I recommend between four days and one week. If you have limited time, focus on the most iconic beaches and spend a day exploring the charming villages of the island, such as Ciutadella, Es Mercadal or Fornells. In a few days you can see the essentials, but Menorca has so much to offer that there will always be things left to discover.

4. Can Menorca be visited in 3 or 4 days?

Although at least 5 days would be ideal to enjoy the island calmly, 3 or 4 days are enough to see the highlights, such as the most beautiful coves and some picturesque villages. If you have little time, concentrate on the south coast and the Camí de Cavalls.

5. Is Menorca expensive? How much does an average trip cost?

Menorca can be somewhat expensive, especially in high season (July and August), when prices rise. However, it is possible to enjoy the island on a moderate budget. The average daily expenditure usually ranges between €80 and €150, depending on the type of accommodation and activities chosen.

To save, it is advisable to book in advance, take advantage of offers or travel outside high season, when prices drop considerably and it is easier to find accommodation and cheap flights.

6. Where to stay in Menorca? Is Ciutadella or Mahón better?

Both are excellent choices. If you are looking for a livelier atmosphere, with a wide range of restaurants and nightlife, Ciutadella is your best option. In addition, in its surroundings you will find urbanizations such as Cala en Blanes, Son Xoriguer and others on the west coast, ideal for those who want to be close to spectacular coves and have all services available.

On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, Mahón, with its charming port and proximity to the airport. If you want to explore the east of the island, it can be ideal. You can also consider staying in Es Castell, with its lovely Cales Fonts pier, perfect if you are looking for a more urban and picturesque setting near Mahón, or in urbanizations like Punta Prima and Binibeca, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beach.

If you are looking for a stay on the north coast, Son Parc is a great option, especially for golf lovers, as it houses the only course on the island. Another alternative is Arenal d’en Castell, which has a wide beach with calm waters, a family atmosphere, and a great offer of activities for all ages, bars, and restaurants by the sea. The north coast, being less touristy, is ideal for those seeking tranquility and natural landscapes.

In the south of the island, destinations like Son Bou and Cala Galdana are also perfect for families, with calm-water beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Furthermore, this area stands out for its variety of services and well-equipped hotels and apartments. Check out our complete accommodation guide here.

7. How to get around Menorca without a car?

If you don’t want to rent a car, the island has options such as public buses that connect some of the main towns and urbanizations. You can also rent a bicycle or a scooter, which will allow you to explore at your own pace. To reach some more remote coves, taxis or organized excursions are another good alternative.

8. Is it necessary to rent a car in Menorca?

Although it is not strictly necessary, renting a car allows you to explore the island freely, especially to reach the most secluded coves. There is a public transport system, but it is limited and does not reach many of the most beautiful coves. Renting a scooter is another excellent option.

9. What are the best beaches and coves in Menorca?

The island is full of stunning beaches. Cala Macarella and Cala Mitjana are two of the best known, but if you are looking for a quieter place, you cannot miss Cala Trebalúger, which can only be reached on foot or by boat. Personally, Cala Pregonda, with its golden sand and crystal-clear waters, is one of my favorites. For going with children, I prefer the beaches of Cala Galdana or Son Parc, with shallow waters and a large play area.

10. How to avoid crowded beaches in Menorca in summer?

To avoid the crowds, it is best to go early in the morning or at sunset. If you prefer a quieter experience, less accessible coves like Cala Pregonda, Cala Mica or Arenal de Mongofre are perfect for enjoying silence and nature.

11. Which beaches and coves in Menorca have parking nearby?

If you prefer convenience, beaches like Cala Galdana, Son Bou and Arenal d’en Castell have parking nearby. Cala’n Bosch also has good access. However, some of the more remote coves, like Cala Pilar, require a bit more effort to reach, as the roads are very narrow with some unpaved sections.

12. What is the best beach bar (chiringuito) or beach club in Menorca?

If you feel like enjoying a sunny day, the restaurant at Binimel.la beach is one of my favorite places to relax by the sea. Another very special spot is the Isabella Beach Club in Playas de Fornells or the Xiringuito at Cala Tirant. Check our beaches with beach bars section to learn more.

13. Where to see the best sunset in Menorca?

Some of the best spots to watch the sunset are Es Pont d’en Gil, the Punta Nati Lighthouse, the Cavalleria Lighthouse, and the beach of Santo Tomás. However, one of my favorite places is the Cova d’en Xoroi, a disco-bar set in a cave on the cliffs of Cala en Porter, where you will enjoy a spectacular view while having a drink.

14. What are the best markets in Menorca?

Markets are an excellent way to get to know the local culture. The ones in Es Mercadal on Thursdays, and Fornells on Saturday nights, are very popular. The Ciutadella market, held on Mondays and Fridays in Plaza del Borne, has a great variety of local products. And the Mahón market, which takes place on Tuesday nights in Plaza del Carmen, is also very popular.

15. Where to buy authentic sobrasada or Menorcan cheese?

You cannot leave Menorca without trying sobrasada. You will find the best in local shops like Sa Cooperativa del Camp or at farms like Lluriach, where the farmers sell traditional cheeses and cold meats directly. If you want something truly authentic, visit the Subaida cheese dairy, where they produce an excellent Menorcan cheese.

16. Which are the best restaurants to eat well and cheap in Menorca?

The island has excellent gastronomy at reasonable prices. Es Cranc, in Fornells, is the ideal place to try the famous Lobster Stew (Caldereta de Langosta), a traditional Menorcan dish. Another great option in the area is Sa Llagosta, recognized for its high-quality seafood cuisine.

If you are looking for an experience in the interior, Ca n’Olga, in Es Mercadal, is one of my favorite restaurants, with well-crafted dishes and top-quality products. For a more economical option, I recommend the set menu at Es Moli d’es Raco, where you can enjoy authentic Menorcan cuisine at a good price.

These are just some of the restaurants you will find in our gastronomic guide: Where to eat?.

17. What are the best excursions or activities in Menorca?

I recommend a boat trip along the coast, especially at sunrise or sunset, when the coves look magical from the sea. You can also take kayak and snorkeling excursions to discover the marine fauna in more isolated coves. If you are looking for a charming spot, Binibeca is a must-visit: this picturesque fishing village, with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses, is perfect for getting lost and enjoying its unique atmosphere.

You also shouldn’t miss the free guided tours of the historical centers of Mahón and Ciutadella, where history and architecture will transport you to another era. Furthermore, if you are interested in the island’s prehistoric past, the Talayotic Route is a fascinating experience. This group of megalithic monuments, declared a World Heritage Site, will allow you to discover the origins of Menorca through its impressive archaeological remains. You can see more excursions and leisure activities here.

18. Which are the best hiking routes in Menorca?

If you prefer to explore the island on foot, the Camí de Cavalls is one of the best options. This historical path, which encircles the entire coast of Menorca, offers spectacular routes for both hikers and cyclists, and traversing it is a unique experience for nature lovers. Along its different sections, you can enjoy very varied landscapes, from impressive cliffs to Mediterranean forests and virgin beaches.

If you are looking for a more relaxed walk, the route from Son Saura (Son Parc) to Ses Salines de Fornells is an excellent choice. The trail is accessible and offers stunning sea views, passing through the La Concepción Reserve, an area of great ecological value. Along the way, you can also discover the remains of a paleo-Christian basilica and learn firsthand about the production of fleur de sel in the bay of Fornells, a Menorcan tradition that remains active.

19. Can you visit the inside of the Menorcan lighthouses?

Although they are not open to the public, the lighthouses of Menorca, such as Faváritx or Cavalleria, offer breathtaking views of the coast. The areas surrounding the lighthouses are perfect for taking photos and enjoying the scenery, especially during their spectacular sunsets.

20. Where to see turtles or wild animals in Menorca?

The Albufera des Grau is an excellent area for bird watching, and occasionally you can see sea turtles. Additionally, some boat excursions offer the possibility of spotting dolphins. Menorca’s biodiversity is one of its great treasures. For the little ones, you have the option of visiting the Lloc de Menorca zoo in Alaior.
